We are a service group through the Alternative Breaks program at UC San Diego. Alternative Breaks is a part of the national non-profit organization, Break Away. Alternative Breaks are national or international service learning trips held during spring and summer breaks that use education of social justice issues combined with strong direct service to have a lasting impact on students and the communities they work alongside.
The Invisibility of Disability - Inspiring the potential within us all
We are all born with an inherent potential to live our lives with respect and dignity. However, for children and adults with disabilities, this potential is often time misjudged or misunderstood by society. Our trip will work together to break these misconceptions and unveil the potential that lies within the children and adults with disabilities that we will serve.
Mission:
Our aim is to unveil the potential within people with disabilities, so they will see that their voices can change the world around them.
Vision:
To advance society’s outlook on children and adults with disabilities
Throughout the year we will explore the issues that surround disability within society. During our trip, our team will utilize what we have learned throughout the year and obtain hands on experience working with children and adults with disabilities.
Our projects will include working with clients of Damar Services in the classroom and gym, guiding students with art activities, and helping out with lunch. We also will assist cleaning up classrooms, preparing for upcoming events, and helping out wherever else we are needed!
We hope that through these experiences the awareness that each individual, no matter what their situation is, has to potential to live life to the fullest!
We will travel from San Diego, California to Indianapolis, Indiana to work with Damar Services organization March 21-29, 2015.
