Prom dress shopping day!!!! This day began bright and early in “the pod,” a storage unit for hundreds of donated clothes for prom at Damar. We broke up into teams. One to sort the dresses into sizes and the other to move the men’s clothes to the gym, quite a task in the freezing-cold-Indiana weather for us Californians. Burrrr!!! The hard work warmed us up for the day to come. After setting up a store for the girls to shop in the gym, we were joined by a younger crowd of eager kiddos. Basketballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls flew everywhere! After getting our blood pumped up, we were ready for the girls to begin their shopping sprees.
Jess and Sunny had an amazing experience working with a girl named *Audrey* with whom they selected a dress, cardigan, adorable shoes, and learned some new dance moves. Kelly and Joie worked with *Justine* who adored the color pink and puffy princess gowns. The look on Justine’s face was priceless when we found her the perfect princess gown. Look out for Princess Justine at prom! We were able to select the perfect outfits for 16 beautiful ladies. It was such an amazing experience to get to know these lovely ladies through exploring their individual tastes as we picked out the perfect items. We look forward to hearing about their experiences at prom in May.
Our day ended with scrapbooking with a group of girls. There were enough supplies to make a even a professional scrap-booker jealous. Through this activity, we were able to work in a closer and more personal environment, which was different from the group atmosphere that we had experienced through our previous recreational activities. This allowed us to learn more about their personalities and how these could be expressed creatively. We wrapped up our day with a little creativity ourselves: finger-painting! Mike Kraft organized this hand painting activity, however he kept the purpose of our art project a mystery. Today contained many heart-warming moments and our team is continuously growing and learning from them.
