Part 2 of the prom saga!! Today we started our day sorting clothes to set up shop for the boys’ prom fitting day. We sorted hundreds of jackets, shirts, pants, shoes, ties, and even vests to create an organized store for the boys to shop in. The whole process took us about 3 hours but by 12 o’clock we were hungry for lunch and excited to fit the boys later that afternoon. Today’s lunch was beef stew, applesauce, cheesecake, and the most delicious and moist cornbread ever (we definitely went back for seconds)!
After our tummies were filled, we headed out to the classrooms to experience the school atmosphere that Damar provides. Our group split up and each worked in one of two classrooms for one hour and then switched. Half of our group worked with teenage boys playing hangman and WOW they were good! In the other classroom we interacted with clients who were close to our own ages in a life skills class. We worked on making Easter eggs, coloring pictures, and making goodie bags for tomorrow’s party. We also really enjoyed getting to talk to some of the clients and learning how many similar interests we had with them.
Finally, it was time to fit the boys for their prom clothes! We were able to find outfits for 54 excited boys. The clients were very tasteful and creative in their choices, for example an orange vest with a green tie, a yellow shirt with a Spongebob tie, and even “east coast preppy” with tan pants, a navy jacket, and red striped tie. The kids were so elated and all looked so dapper that we left the gym tonight satisfied with our hearts melted. Working with all the boys was very rewarding and taught us how diverse and unique all the clients at Damar while reminding us of our prom glory days!
