It’s mulchin’ time. Our third day began with mulching the gardens of Damar campus. We picked up the shovels and rakes, and began the work to prepare the gardens clean and fresh for the Spring. We distributed about 30 square yards of mulch around the campus. Mike Kraft briefly mentioned that the state of the campus reflects how the children are treated at Damar. We kept this in mind and put all of our efforts into this project.
It’s banner time. Mike repurposed some old banners previously used for golf tournaments and we decorated with pictures and words of encouragement. These banners that we made today will be hung up on the walls of the units the boys and girls live in Damar. We made a variety of banners; some gender-neutral, some gender-specific. And of course, they were all beautiful. Simply knowing that they will brighten up the kids at Damar made all of us feel happy and proud. Damar is love I say. Damar is life.
It’s rollin’ time. With the girls who won the Special Olympics basketball tournament, we were treated to pizza and roller-skating social event. After feasting on Papa Jones pizza, we drove across the city to a roller skate rink rented out just for all of us. Before the skating event started, Mike surprised us with Damar T-shirts! Having had watched only the staffs and the kids at Damar wear those T-shirts, we felt accepted into the community and we were simply happy. In the rink, there was a varying degree of expertise in both our AB group and also the girls. As we struggled and earned some bruises together, girls opened up to us more and we got to know them better.
